DCC Heads West

Dublin does not have a monopoly on traffic congestion or chronic cycling conditions. Galway suffers similar problems, but all will hopefully change with new plans for street pedestrianisation and the creation of a system of eight cycle lanes and ten cycle parks, as outlined in the recently published Draft Development Plan.

To ensure that high quality cycle lanes are built without delay and that an integrated network is created, as opposed to token cycle facilities, Galway’s cyclists have decided to create a cycle campaigning group. It will also lobby the planning and transport authorities to extend any city-wide network into the countryside, with disused railway lines being transformed into safe cycling havens. To this end, a conference is being planned for a Saturday within the next month or so in Galway city. Cycle campaigners from around the country will descend on Galway bringing with them their experiences and ideas, and will help launch the GALWAY CYCLING CAMPAIGN.

DCC members are asked to contact Ronnie O’ Gorman (Galway Advertiser, 2-3 Church Lane, Galway. Ph. (091)567077, Fax (091)567079, Email galwayad@iol.ie) or Damien Ó Tuama (Lahard, 56 Weston Park, Dundrum, D14. Ph. 2984984, Email mbrosnan@ollamh.ucd.ie) if they have friends or family in the west who they think would be keen to be involved in such an event or campaign.

This trip to Galway will double up as a social weekend away and all members and friends of the DCC are very welcome to come along. The date will be decided upon within the next fortnight.
