Butterfly Project, Garden Workshop

Dublin Community Growers Butterfly Project, Garden Workshop.
This event is aimed at both adults and children, and provides practical hands on experience, and knowledge, of the butterflies that coexist with us amongst the urban landscape of Dublin
When: 12pm-2pm, Saturday the 21st of August 2010.
Where: Robert Emmet CDP Garden at Bridgefoot Street.
Event Synopsis:
The Garden Butterfly Workshop aims to provide a practical hands on experience, and knowledge, of the butterflies that coexist with us amongst the urban landscape of Dublin. A talk and demonstration will serve to reveal butterfly life cycle and habits, while gardening methods for encouraging and supporting their presence will also be described. The event is aimed at both adults and children, with the intention of answering questions, and providing information and advice. While providing an afternoon of recreational fun within this central Dublin location, the gardening workshops also seek to deliver environmental contributions in the following three areas:
Education:
This is the first of multiple workshops that are planned for Dublin City Community Gardens throughout the summer teaching ecological and insect friendly gardening.
Promotion:
The hosting of these workshops at community gardens serves to both highlight the usefulness of community gardens as an amenity, and to promote their potential for biodiversity improvement within the city.
Research:
An important component of the workshops will be to train volunteers from both the community gardens, and the wider community, in the correct identification of adult butterflies, and the necessary methodology for recording their presence and relative populations. Volunteers will be instructed in both data capture, and data submission towards Butterfly Conservation's recording scheme.
Proposed Order of Speech:
Dublin Naturalists' Field Club...Butterfly Identification and Lifestyle.
Robert Moss...Recording of Butterfly Species within Dublin.
