Dear fellow resident of Dublin,
You may be aware that Dublin City Council has recently introduced a 30km/h speed limit on a limited number of city centre streets. These are busy streets with heavy pedestrian and cyclist use. These streets are now more pleasant, more attractive and safer for everyone, from cyclists on Dublin Bikes to an elderly lady trying to cross Dame Street. The roads are less threatening for all of us.
Unfortunately a motion is before Dublin City Council on the 1st of March to either scrap or severely dilute this initiative. As citizens of Dublin, we are appalled by this.
The best opportunity - in perhaps 4 decades - to change the culture of the city centre and calm it for the better is being lost because of an utter lack of vision by a significant number of our elected councillors. Many of them forget that there were at least 25 road traffic fatalities within the 30km/h zone between 1998 and 2009. Every single one of these victims was either a pedestrian or cyclist.
We need your help.
Please do one or more of the following to help retain the safer, calmer speed limit:
1. Email, ring or text your local councillors explaining that this is a better city with the 30km/h limit. Tell them in your own words. The contact details of all councillors are on http://short.ie/nxeuhj and there are further facts, figures and sample letters on www.dublincycling.ie/30.
2. Join the Facebook page called We love the 30 kmh zone in Dublin City centre - let's keep it!
3. Explain to your friends why it makes sense. Forward them this Support 30 km/h Flyer (Download a .pdf copy and post it in your building or office)
