- The number of people cycling around Dublin city centre is increasing:
- Over the 10-year period, 1998 to 2008, the number of cyclists crossing the cordon formed by the Grand and Royal canals inbound during the morning peak period increased by 34pc (+1,564) with an 8pc increase in the period 2007 to 2008 (+467).
- The number of injuries and fatalities involving cyclists is decreasing: Injury casualties involving cyclists in the Dublin City Council area decreased from 250 in 1998 to 90 in 2007.
- Fatalities involving the same group over the same period decreased from five in 2008 to three in 2007.
- Only one of the bikes has been stolen since the scheme began, according to Dublin councillor Andrew Montague (pictured), who first proposed the scheme in Jure 2004, and it turned up within a couple of days.
