2009-11-01 Inchicore Rd.

The first post on this blog showed the contraflow cycle lane on Inchicore Rd, D8. This works fine on a typical stretch as shown above, apart from the massive holes in the pavement. The problems, as is usual with cycle lanes occur at the ends...

At the beginning on Inchicore Rd the cycle lane begins abruptly in the middle of a footpath beside Inchicore Rd. The photo is looking East and Inchicore Road is one-way Westbound for general vehicles with a two way cycle lane. Cyclists do not appear out of nowhere so there is no way for them to access the lane without breaking the law by cycling on the footpath. This is clearly unacceptable.

At the end of Inchicore Road at the junction with South Circular Road (see below looking East) the cycle lane dumps cyclists back on the footpath before abruptly ending completely. Any cyclists who do not want to break the law by cycling on the footpath must presumably pass through the 400 mm wide gap between the traffic island and the pavement as indicated by the arrow on the yellow bollard.

The same applies to the cycle lane going Westbound. It begins abruptly in the middle of the footpath here before dropping down onto the street.
