2009-03-26 Thomas St. D8

This photo is looking East along Thomas St. D8 at the junction with Bridgefoot St. The cyclelane is particularly dangerous.
On Thomas St. Eastbound there is a bus/cycle lane and a general vehicle lane. As the bus/cycle lane approaches the junction it is opened up to allow left-turning traffic into it. However, the cycle lane continues along the kerb, i.e. on the left of the traffic which is turning left. This puts cyclists who are carrying on in conflict with left-turning vehicles. The cycle lane is marked in the one position where it is typically least appropriate to travel.
The width of the cycle lane is also a substandard 1.2 m.
In this case the situation is even worse. Note the signal arrangement. The left turning traffic has a green signal to turn left only. Traffic going straight on and right has a red signal. Therefore the arrangement has stopped the cyclist shown who is carrying straight on at a red signal while giving a green signal to the left-turning traffic which is passing the substandard width cycle lane.
This junction was highlighted in Dublin Cycling Campaign's Submission on the Thomas St. QBC Proposals in March 2009. Nothing has been done eight months later.
