Velo City ’99

Velo-city, the 11th International Bicycle Planning Conference will take place in mid- April. The location for the event this time is unusual – the twin cities of Graz (Austria) and Maribor (Slovenia).

Velo-city is the main international cycling planning conference in the world The conference takes place every two years and moves to a different city for each event.

The conference is aimed at cyclists, planners, engineers, politicians, academics, consultants, the cycle trade and others whose work impacts on cycling.

One of the objectives this year is to increase the number of cyclists in general traffic. Safety for cyclists is also on the agenda given the most recent statistics of 2,500 cyclists killed and 140,000 cyclists injured in road accidents in 1996.

The Dublin Cycling Campaign is not sponsoring any member to go this year but we hope that members who do go will keep us informed of developments.

We hear that the City of Dublin is a possible location for the next Velo-city (or maybe the one after that). The Local Authorities have to apply and the local cycling users group (the Dublin Cycling Campaign to you) have to cooperate in getting the event. Are the DCC up to it ... only time will tell. (BS)
